Neelum Valley (Indian Side, primarily known as Keran & Gurez Valley) is a serene border region located in the Kupwara and Bandipora districts of Jammu & Kashmir. The valley is divided by the roaring Kishanganga River (known as the Neelum River across the border), which acts as the natural Line of Control (LOC) separating India and Pakistan. It is famous for its wooden houses, pristine pine forests, untouched alpine meadows, and direct views of villages situated on the opposite side of the river.

The Neelum Valley (Keran) tour starts from Srinagar with a scenic drive via Kupwara, Pharkian Top, and the dense Lolab forests. It covers major border sightseeing spots and remote villages over 5 to 6 days. Keran serves as the primary base camp on the bank of the Kishanganga River, from where you can explore border posts, nature trails, and nearby offbeat gems like Bangus Valley and Gurez.

Day 1: Drive from Srinagar to Kupwara & Keran Valley

Highlights : Scenic drive through Kupwara, crossing Pharkian Top (9,600 ft), and first views of Kishanganga River.

Details: Pick up from Srinagar early morning and proceed toward Kupwara. Cross the high mountain pass at Pharkian Top offering breathtaking aerial views of the valley. Proceed down to Keran Village located right on the Line of Control. Check-in at your homestay/camp, relax by the Kishanganga River (Neelum River), and enjoy a warm local dinner.
Day 2: Full Day Keran Village & LOC Riverfront Exploration

Day 3: Keran to Lolab Valley / Kalaroos Caves

Highlights : Vast untouched meadows of Bod Bangus and Lakut Bangus, alpine streams, and wildflower fields.

Details: Early morning drive to Bangus Valley, one of the most pristine alpine meadows in North Kashmir. Enjoy nature walks across green pastures, photography, and picnic lunches amidst snow-capped peaks. Return to Kupwara/Lolab in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

You must carry your original Aadhaar Card or Passport along with at least 8 to 10 photocopies for verification at Army and Police checkpoints.

Yes, absolutely. Keran Valley is completely peaceful, safe, and heavily secured by security forces. Local residents are extremely hospitable, and tourists visit regularly to experience border-side village culture and riverside views.

The ideal time to visit is from May to October. During these months, the mountain passes (like Pharkian Top) are open, the weather is pleasant, and the Kishanganga River flows clear surrounded by green meadows.

Keran Valley is approximately 140 km from Srinagar via Kupwara. The drive takes around 5 to 6 hours owing to scenic mountain roads and check-post clearances.

Mobile connectivity (even BSNL/Jio) can be weak or non-existent in Keran due to its remote border location. ATMs are not available in Keran, so you must carry sufficient cash from Kupwara or Srinagar.
